New Hong Kong Seaport Alliance Under Scrutiny

On Jan 8, Hongkong International Terminals (HIT), Modern Terminals (MTL), COSCO-HIT Terminals (CHT) and Asia Container Terminals (ACT) formed the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance which holds a 95% market share at the port - a move already under investigation by HKG Competition Commission.
Kwai Tsing Port consists of 9 container terminals with 24 berths and handles over roughly about 80% of the total container throughput. CHT and ACT each owns 2 berths in Terminal 8; HIT owns 12 berths in Terminals 4, 6, 7 and 9; and MTL owns 7 berths in Terminals 1, 2, 5 and 9.
The Alliance is to deliver more efficient service offerings, to enhance the competitiveness and to use a common terminal operating system across the terminals. Goodman DP World which operates one berth, is not participating in the Alliance.
HKG port and logistics sector currently accounts for 3.2% of the GDP and provides more than 174,000 industry related jobs. (MarEx)
