SOLAS Verified Gross Mass requirement with effect from Jul 1 2016

Starting Jul 1 2016, IMO under SOLAS convention requires any container leaving from any port in the world must be accompanied by a shipping document signed either electronically or in hard copy by the shipper on the bill of lading listing the verified gross mass (VGM) of a container in order to be loaded onto a ship.

The VGM is used for stowage planning and the carrier and terminal operator are barred from loading a container for which a VGM hasn’t been received.

The weighing must be done in one of two approved ways on scales calibrated and certified to the national standards.

(1) be weighed at the loading container at an approved weighing station; or
(2) all items in the container weighed and then included in the overall container’s weight calculation.
